Does switching an AC on and off save electricity, or is it better to leave it running?

For an inverter AC, leaving it running at a steady set temperature is generally more efficient than switching it off and on repeatedly — restarting means the compressor briefly draws more power to ramp back up, and the room needs to be re-cooled from a warmer starting point each time.
